Homeless teens are often overlooked and undercounted in studies of homelessness, likely because they are only partially homeless, relying on generosity of friends and extended family. Who are they? The Runaway and Homeless Youth Act (RHYA) defines homeless youth as individuals who are not more than 21 years of age [and unaccompanied by families or caregivers]… for whom it is not possible to live in a safe environment with a relative and who have no other safe living arrangement. In California, "homeless teens" refers to unaccompanied minors ages 12 through 17 who are living apart from their parents or legal guardians.
Homeless youth are defined as under 21 years old and unaccompanied by families or caregivers. About 4.2 million youth (roughly 1 in 30) and young adults in the US experience homelessness each year.
According to the US Dept of Education, after a decline for several years, student homelessness is rising again.
